More Technology, More Time?

Our alarm goes off and we jump into the day. Often, the busyness starts from the moment we wake up and only stops once we hit the pillow. Communications professionals are especially plugged-in, paying attention to the sprawling information available through modern technologies to be informed in-the-moment and to train for the future of the evolving industry.

But Grossman (2017) claims that these technologies have given the average person more time in their day. Uber helps us schedule a ride, Amazon lets us skip a trip to the store, and our mobile devices connect us to it all. In fact, Grossman mentions that "the day is now apparently 30 percent longer than it used to be."

But with more time at our fingertips, we easily find new ways to use that time. Because our mobile devices keep us connected to so many activities and seemingly endless information, there is an expectation that we will stay connected.

Technology, especially mobile, has given us the ability to accomplish so much more in the same amount of time. However, it has also opened the doorway to an expectation that we must accomplish so much--and more--in shorter amounts of time.

Ever feel like this?
